The African Congress for Transformation (ACT) is intensifying its election campaign in the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, putting service delivery failures at the centre of its campaign ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.
ACT Treasurer General and Free State MPL Mamikie Mkhabela has raised concerns over persistent service delivery challenges affecting communities in Matjhabeng, including raw sewage spillages and the non-collection of refuse. Mkhabela says these problems are having a direct impact on residents’ quality of life, while also raising concerns about the health and safety of communities.
Mkhabela said it was not about elections. “It is about human dignity,” she said.
According to ACT, in Matjhabeng families are living with sewage spilling into their yards – and into their homes.
“When it rains, the water and sewage rises so high inside one home that eight-month-old twins have to sleep on top of a fridge to stay above it. Think about that. No parent should have to make that choice. No child should have to live like this. No community should have to accept this as normal.
“Basic sanitation. Safe homes. Dignified living conditions. These are not election promises. They are basic human needs. The Free State Can Work Again,” said the party
