After playing like house on fire and taking the game to Argentina in their second world cup match, Banyana Banyana gave away their 2- 0 lead and allowed their opponents two score equalising goals in a space of five minutes.
Despite netting their first world cup goal in this exhilarating encounter with Argentina’s La Albiceleste and doubling it as well, the South African team faltered in the 74th minute when the defence struggled to deal with Argentina’s long balls into the box. Banyana Banyana are now perched on the third spot in Group G with slim chances of going into the next round.
In an exciting game played at Dunedin Stadium in Dunedin, New Zealand, Banyana Banyana played a thrilling game with Thembi Kgatlana stealing the limelight. For 73 minutes, the game belonged to South Africa.
It was on the 74th minute when Argentina’s La Albiceleste team made their intentions clear with the first goals scored by Sophia Braun. The second goal followed five minutes through Romina Nunez on the 79th minute. Linda Motlhalo and Kgatlana netted for Banyana Banyana on the 31st and 67th minutes respectively.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons on the other hand smashed the host Australia 3 – 2 at Brisbane Stadium, Brisbane/Meaanjin on Thursday to top Group B and raise high the African hopes in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 in Australia & New Zealand.
Both Nigeria and Australia scored their opening goals at the half time clock with the host being the first to find the net. However, Australian team’s joy was short-lived as Nigeria responded immediately. Nigeria increased the tally in the second half. Australia fought back fiercely but could only go as far as scoring only goal number two giving Nigeria the edge.
