Vrede homeowner succumbs to his injuries after house torched

As the police patrolled the town of Vrede on the morning of Sunday, 27 June 2021 at about 03:00am they received a complaint of a certain house which was on fire at Van Heerden Street in Vrede.

On arrival they found the owner of the house who introduced himself as Henk Beukes (62) covered with a blanket. He alleged that he was rescued by neighbors from the burning house.

According to the police the victim alleged that whilst sleeping, he heard footsteps in the kitchen and went to inspect. He was allegedly confronted by two males who gained entry into his house by breaking a window. He confronted them and they allegedly attacked him with an iron bar and knife. He tried to fight back but was overpowered, assaulted until he became unconscious.

After a while he regained consciousness and noticed that there was smoke in the house and flames coming from another room. The victim is staying alone in the house.

Apparently he was rescued by his neighbour and later rushed to Vrede hospital where he died a few hours after being admitted.

Police are investigating a case of murder and arson.
