School minibuses now a target

Free State police are concerned at the rise of the theft of school minibuses.

About six Quantum school buses were reported stolen from school yards since March 2020 and five were recovered.

Free State Police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said preliminary investigation discovered that Toyota Quantum minibus taxis used as school buses were targeted in the Free State and were stolen whilst parked inside the school yards.

“All school buses are branded with school names written on the sides. Two were stolen in an Old Age home and in Ladybrand children’s home, one in Zastron school, one in a Clocolan school, one in a Harrismith school and one from a school in Marquard.

“A White Toyota Quantum minibus that was stolen on the 17th of November 2020 from Clocolan High school has not been found.

“Members of the public are urged to report any minibus or school bus belonging to a school which is driven or spotted in the early hours of the morning or late at night.

“The vehicle might be stolen or be used without the school’s knowledge,” said Makhele.

In any such eventuality the nearest police station can be contacted or contact Ladybrand Vehicle investigation Service Commander Lieutenant Colonel George Tshabalala at 082 301 9521 or Crime Stop 08600 10111.
