The “Mothepu Group Soccer and Netball Tournament 2021” held over the Easter weekend in Phiritona, Heilbron ended on an exciting note with teams and individual players receiving accolades, attires and trophies.
The tournament was organized as a way of contributing to the upliftment and as part of re-investment to the community of Phiritona, and also to tackle social ills faced by the youth such as substance abuse, gangsterism and many others. In a tournament that was held at the Black Swallows Sports Arena in Phiritona, 17 football and 4 netball teams participated.
Phiritona Mighty Rockers FC was crowned the champions in the football category while Siyadlala won the netball tournament.
Speaking after the event, the main sponsor of the tournament and owner of Mothepu Group Super Stores, Piet Mothepu expressed gratitude to Phiritona community, participants and key stakeholders of the tournament.
“We would like to thank the support we have received from the community of Phiritona, Heilbron throughout this tournament and I would also like to thank everyone who played a role from organizers to players and the community.
“With this tournament we are beginning with the process of revolutionalising our township sports, and I’m happy that many young and exciting players have been identified in this tournament and in future such tournament can be used as a feeder to bigger teams in our province and to other teams,” said Mothepu.
Representative of the Sports and Recreation Council in the area, Shoaneng Sefali, said they were grateful to the sponsor of the tournament for affording youth an opportunity after 2 to 3 years of Easter tournament drought.
“There is a lot of talent in this area of Phiritona and we need and welcome such support shown by the Mothepu Group Super Stores to give platforms for our youth and athletes to entertain and showcase their talent”.
The tournament attracted approximately 400 participants from both Netball and soccer players. Many young players were identified from various categories such as the player of the tournament, young disciplined players of the tournament and many more, meanwhile in netball awards also went to best shooter of the tournament, most valuable player and player of the tournament amongst others.
