Ngwathe Local Municipality has reaffirmed its position as a forward-looking and solutions-driven municipality following its strategic participation at the Extended Presidential Coordinating Council (PCC), held at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre.
The Ngwathe delegation, led by Executive Mayor Cllr Victoria de Beer-Mthombeni and Accounting Officer Dr. F.P. Mothamaha, joined key national and provincial leadership, including Panyaza Lesufi, Velenkosini Hlabisa, and the President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa.
The PCC remains a critical intergovernmental platform designed to strengthen alignment, coordination, and cooperative governance across all spheres of government in addressing pressing national priorities.
NGWATHE RECOGNISED FOR LEADERSHIP IN WATER SOLUTIONS
At the centre of deliberations was South Africa’s escalating water crisis, which is now receiving urgent national attention through the National Water Crisis Committee (NWCC), chaired by President Ramaphosa.
Ngwathe Local Municipality stood out among municipalities as a leading example in proactive water governance and sustainable service delivery. The municipality was acknowledged for its innovative water solution strategies, forward planning, and commitment to infrastructure development, particularly in response to increasing population demands.
Key towns within Ngwathe—including Parys, Vredefort, and Koppies—were highlighted as areas where significant progress is being made. Water treatment plant refurbishment projects in these areas are nearing completion, incorporating modern technologies aimed at delivering clean, reliable, and sustainable water services.
A COMMITMENT TO WATER SECURITY AND SERVICE EXCELLENCE
Ngwathe Municipality takes pride in being recognised as being ahead of the curve in addressing water challenges. The municipality’s strategic investments in infrastructure renewal, maintenance, and technological upgrades demonstrate a firm commitment to ensuring long-term water security.
Executive Mayor Cllr Victoria de Beer-Mthombeni emphasised that:
> “Ngwathe is not waiting for crisis to define our response. We are actively building resilient systems that guarantee dignified access to clean water for all our communities. Our participation at the PCC affirms that local government can lead with innovation, discipline, and accountability.”
STRENGTHENING COOPERATIVE GOVERNANCE
The outcomes of the PCC reinforce the importance of collaboration between national, provincial, and local government in resolving systemic challenges. Ngwathe remains committed to contributing meaningfully to national priorities while ensuring that service delivery at a local level remains efficient, responsive, and people-centred.
MOVING FORWARD
Ngwathe Local Municipality will continue to accelerate infrastructure projects, strengthen institutional capacity, and adopt best practices that position the municipality as a benchmark for service delivery excellence in South Africa.
The municipality calls on all stakeholders, communities, and partners to work together in safeguarding water resources and supporting sustainable development.
