The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Free State held a moving memorial service at Bobbiespark in Bloemfontein on Thursday to celebrate the life and legacy of Sergeant Mahlomola Peter Kareli, a seasoned spokesperson and dedicated member of the Provincial Corporate Communication and Liaison Component.
The service, attended by #SAPS management, colleagues, the media fraternity, and the bereaved family, highlighted the profound impact Sergeant Kareli had on the organization and the community he served.
Brigadier Teboho Jacobs, the Parkweg Station Commander, welcomed all the people who attended the memorial service: “We are here to celebrate a life well lived. Sergeant Kareli performed his work to the fullest.”
Colleagues remembered him as a man of exceptional character and work ethic. SAC Lehlohonolo Mathabeng spoke profoundly about Mahlomola’s warmth, quiet nature, and sense of humor, while also mentioning his deep love for his family, especially his son, Phahamo. Representing the media fraternity, well-renowned media personality and Lesedi FM presenter, Thuso Motaung shared a heartfelt recorded video, describing ‘Sersant’ Kareli as a very soft-spoken person who was always ready to assist, regardless of the time.
Sergeant Kareli’s commitment to his duties remained steadfast even during his illness. Colonel Mamiki Moeketsi remarked: “Even while lying in hospital, he was still doing his 04:00 interviews. He would continue to write statements even when he was sick.”
Former Corporate Communication and Liaison Head, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, described Peter as: “A Good Samaritan” “who would always stop to assist; remembering an accident scene where people were trapped inside a motor vehicle in the darkness on N1 National Road… regardless of how much of a hurry the team was in.
Speaking on behalf of the Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Solomon Lesia and SAPS senior management, the current Provincial Head of Corporate Communication and Liaison Component Brigadier Thandi Mbambo relayed the message: “We remember Sergeant Kareli as a dedicated member of SAPS whose presence touched the lives of many people. He understood that policing is not only about responding to crime, but also about communicating with the media and informing the community with confidence.”
The South African Police Service extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Sergeant Kareli. His legacy of disciplined and diligent service will continue to inspire the organization.
