Mosa Mokalobe is one of three young people representing South Africa at the AFS Intercultural Programs in Brazil.
AFS Intercultural Programs is a global not-for-profit network that provides intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world.
AFS empowers people from all backgrounds with essential global skills through international exchange programs, education initiatives, volunteerism and advocacy.
Mokalobe 16, is a learner at Trio High School in Kroonstad, Moqhaka local municipality in the Free State province. They departed for Brazil on Friday, 03 – 31 July 2026. She responded to a call by AFS Academy to conduct research on a number of topics. Her topic of choice was Zero Hunger, Responsible Consumption and Good Health and Well Being.
She said being involved in agriculture motivated her to choose her topic.
“I want to encourage people to do backyard farming so that they are able to feed their families. That way, they will be less reliant on supermarkets for food. I know the importance of food security because our family has a farm and I am actively involved in planting the crops and taking care of our poultry as well as our piggery,” Mokalobe said.
Even at such a young age, Mokalobe has achieved what many people her age can only dream of. She was part of the Free State team that represented the province at the South African Junior Closed Chess Championships which were held in Rustenburg, North West province.
Although she has not yet decided on the career path she wishes to pursue, Mokalobe said she has a liking for numbers. “I am either going to be a Chartered Accountant or an Actuary,” she said proudly.
Premier of the Free State MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae said she was proud of young Mokalobe. “We wish her all the very best and we are confident that she will represent our province with distinction”. said Premier Letsoha-Mathae.
