The Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDT) together with the Free State Gambling, Liquor and Tourism Authority (FSGLTA) and relevant stakeholders will host an interactive session with Spaza Shop & Tarven owners from around Fezile Dabi District on Friday, 04 September 2026, at Harry Gwala Multi Purpose Centre, Zamdela-Sasolburg from 09h00.
This empowerment workshop brings together the Spaza shop and Tarven owners, including economic development stakeholders, to share ideas towards access to funding, supplier & support opportunities and collaborate on strategies that will boost growth in the township economy and foster sustainable small business development.
MEC Ketso Makume explains that the session serves as an opportunity for the local spaza shop & tarven owners to be equipped with essential business compliance, regulatory requirements, & safety protocols, as well as learning more about how to access financial and non financial support
“Spaza shops are vital corner stores in South Africa and drive the township economy, provide essential local jobs, and offer daily neighborhood convenience. Hence, the need to continue equipping them with knowledge and business skills to help formalise and sustain township economies,” said MEC Makume.
