As many participants took part in a Cancer Awareness Walk over the weekend of the 12th October 2025, in Vanderbijlpark, many did so for various reasons. So was Matshepo Kompe, from Sasolburg who participated for her own personal reasons – grieving and trying to heal from the consequences left by this disease in her life.
It was 12 years ago when Matshepo’s husband was diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately, by then the doctors revealed that the disease was already in its last and final stages, and he passed away two weeks later due to organ failure. Matshepo says this month reminds her of those sad and painful memories, as well as that traumatic day, when doctors revealed the sad news.
“Taking part in such campaigns forms part of my grieving and healing process. As we raise awareness about breast and other various types of cancer, platforms like these offer one an opportunity to meet and share experiences with other people directly or indirectly affected by cancer,” said Matshepo.

This Cancer Awareness Walk was organized by Emfuleni Athletics Club.
Matshepo said going through the grieving and healing process is difficult and needs support, something she believes is missing. “I have realised that there is not much support available for people diagnosed with cancer or their close families. Mostly they cry and suffer in silence and their lives change permanently,” added Matshepo.
“The whole experience has encouraged me to consider establishing a foundation that will help with awareness and support for people affected by cancer and their close relatives, especially in our black communities. I encourage everyone to do regular checkups, as early detection is important in fighting cancer. To the families of those already diagnosed, just have to be strong and keep the faith,” said Matshepo.
Matshepo is the current Miss Sedibeng 2025, and is involved in various community upliftment projects.
