Vrede FCS secures 35 years sentencing for rape

The Vrede Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, led by Detective Warrant Officer D.R. Twala, in collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), has successfully secured the conviction and sentencing of Bongizizwe Nduna Mbonane (38) from Zamane near Memel.

On Wednesday, 25 February 2026, the accused was sentenced by the Vrede Regional Court to 35 years’ direct imprisonment after being found guilty on two counts of rape and attempted murder.

On 11 November 2023 at approximately 05:50, a 33-year-old woman from Zamani Township near Memel was walking home with a friend from a local tavern. During their walk, they were confronted by the accused from behind. He assaulted the victim’s companion, causing him to flee the scene, leaving the woman alone.

The accused then overpowered the victim and dragged her to a nearby open area close to a river, where he raped her. Thereafter, he assaulted her and left her in the river, believing she was dead. Despite her injuries, the victim managed to escape and seek help from a nearby residence.
