As Captain Gift Setlogelo Matsheka retires, his baton is safe in good hands of Captain Christina Lekgolokwe Kganyane.
As South Africa observes Women’s Month, the South African Police Service (SAPS) pays tribute to its specialised units who tirelessly protect women, children and other vulnerable members of society.
The spotlight is on the Zamdela Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in the Free State.
Under the leadership of Captain Gift Setlogelo Matsheka, who retired end of June 2025, Zamdela FCS cemented itself as a formidable force against gender-based violence, femicide (GBVF) and sexual crimes. In the past year alone, the unit secured three life terms and a combined 175 years’ imprisonment against seven convicted sexual offenders, ensuring that dangerous criminals are permanently removed from communities.

Carrying this legacy forward is Captain Christina Lekgolokwe Kganyane, who now commands the unit which is responsible for specialised investigations across five police stations namely Deneysville, Oranjeville, Sasolburg, Viljoensdrif and Zamdela.

Kganyane has established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the fight against GBVF. Since joining the FCS environment, she has personally secured ten life sentences, with her highest conviction resulting in 174 years’ imprisonment for a sexual offender.
With over two decades of policing experience, Kganyane’s career reflects resilience, growth and determination. From her early years as a constable at Ficksburg, to detective work in Sasolburg, and finally into the ranks of the FCS when it was launched in 2010, she has remained committed to pursuing justice for survivors.
The Zamdela FCS Unit is not only about arrests and convictions; it represents the voice of the voiceless, the shield of the vulnerable, and the promise that perpetrators of sexual crimes will face the full might of the law.
As Women’s Month reminds us of the ongoing struggle against gender-based violence, the Zamdela FCS Unit stands as a beacon of hope and justice; proving that through dedication and courage, communities can be made safer and offenders held accountable.
