Whether you are planning a heritage tour, exploring local attractions or simply interested in South Africa’s stories of beauty, the Little Church offers a journey through time and offers a moment of silence in worship as you pass by.
Celebrating 100 years, this historic landmark has stood as a symbol of community, faith, and architectural beauty.
Step into a century of history with the Little Church, a true heritage and tourism gem.

Officially known as Llandaff Oratory, the Little Church is situated in the tiny town of Van Reenen, about 35 km south of Harrismith and just a stone’s throw away from the N3 national road.
It was built in 1925 by then retired magistrate, Maynard Reginald Nelson Matthews, in honour and memory of his son, Llandaff Matthews, who died in a mining rockfall at Burnside Colliery near Glencoe while trying to save trapped miners.

Llandaff Oratory is an 8-seat church. The eight seats represent the eight miners, whom the young Matthews died trying to rescue.
As this South Africa’s key heritage site and tourism attraction marks its centenary, there are plans to celebrate this milestone with a special church service in November.
