Set yourself free from your holdbacks, writes Pastor Matefu Mokoena

If you are serious about taking your life to the next level, then you need to detach yourself from anything and everything that is holding you back. Just take a bold decision today to set yourself free from your holdbacks.

Holdbacks are the things that hold us back. They are those things that delay our progress. They are those things that keep us busy and distract us from pursuing our real goals and dreams in life. They are those things that we find ourselves wasting our time on, yet they are taking us nowhere. We end up thinking we are going somewhere but only to realise later that actually we have been on the road to nowhere. On some of those things, we have wasted our energies, money and resources but we are still the same.

In taking your life to the next level, you need to identify the things that are delaying your progress. Until you get loose from what is holding you back, progress will become a hurdle. Whenever you try to take a step forward, you regress because you haven’t addressed the underlying causes of your delay.

Many people are wondering why are they not progressing in life. They wonder why they stay the same. They wonder why is there no noticeable change in their lives. They wonder why their peers, former classmates, friends and colleagues are making good progress in life while they are not making any move.

It is time to do a thorough self-examination and look at all the things that are holding you back. There are things that one needs to check that could be delaying and distracting you. Some of the things that hold people back are:

  • Associations

The kind of people that we associate with could be a major distraction to our progress. On the other hand, there are those people who can broaden our horizons and help us unleash our potential. The Scripture in Proverbs 13:20 has good advice on this one. This verse says, “Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.”

Association also relates to relationships that people fall into. Some relationships are just a waste of time. They are doomed even before they start.

  • Idling

Doing nothing is a serious time-waster. The Bible says if you don’t do what you ought to do then you are sinning. “Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it,” James 4:17.

  • Social media

If not used appropriately, accordingly and profitably, then social media becomes a serious holdback. The moment you find yourself spending hours chatting on social media or checking every single post to the point that you neglect what you ought to do, then stay away from it.

  • Doubt

Doubting is described by the Bible as being double-minded. It is the middle road. It is sitting on the fence. It is either this or that. Whichever comes first will do. It is in James 1:6-8. Have faith!

  • Poor decision-making

Our decisions direct the path that we take. Failure to make the right decision has cast many astray. Think and think, and think again. And, decide. Some of our decisions are a result of who we are today.

  • Spending patterns

The way we spend money and the things we spend it on can be a serious delay. If you are serious about taking your life to the next level, spend money on the things that will take you to the next level. If a certain skill is set to make you a better person, then why not spend money on it rather than on a luxury?

  • Lack

Lack is one of the things that is holding many people, and the youth among them, back. People want to do this and that but they do not have money. It is here then we need to come up with ideas on how to deal with this issue of lack. It is in the plurality of ideas and thoughts that we become creative and innovative. It is not only a lack of money that can hold people back. It is also a lack of motivation, wisdom and self-confidence, among others.

These are some of the things that hold people back. There are many others. Identify what holds you back and disconnect yourself from it.
