Illegal student housing in Sasolburg is pushing the town’s infrastructure to the brink, says Democratic Alliance Cllr Phemelo Tabile.
Tabile said the party is raising alarm over properties being illegally converted into high-density student accommodation under the Metsimaholo Local Municipality.
“These buildings operate without proper approvals, safe electricity, or legal water connections putting lives at risk and overloading already struggling infrastructure” said Tabile.
Last week students at the Flavius Mareka TVET College were forced out of their accommodation in the area due to rental non-payment issues relating to NSFAS and property owners.
Tabile said he has submitted written questions on the 18th March 2026, to the Municipal Manager about the ongoing crisis and has requested the office to respond in writing.
“Law-abiding residents are now paying the price through outages, low water pressure, and rising costs. This is not just non-compliance it’s a failure of governance” added Tabile.
