The Metsimaholo Local Municipality says it is aware of the criminal charges laid against it by the Democratic Alliance for ongoing water pollution of the Vaal River system.
On Saturday, the DA opened the criminal case against the municipality at Sasolburg Police Station.
Metsimaholo Spokesperson Dr Gino Alberts said the protection of the Vaal River is not merely an operational concern, it is a critical issue of public health, environmental responsibility, and national heritage.

He said the persistent sewage challenges stem from a combination of factors, including infrastructure damage caused by vandalism, the introduction of foreign materials into the sewer system, and improper waste disposal.
“These actions disrupt pumping and treatment processes, resulting in blockages, mechanical failures, and service interruptions. While technical teams are actively repairing affected infrastructure, interim measures such as manual operations, flow diversions, and intensified environmental monitoring are in place to minimize immediate impact.
Longer-term stability requires not only the full restoration of operational capacity but also enhanced security to prevent sabotage, robust public education on responsible waste disposal, and firm action against any parties found negligent. The Vaal River is a lifeline for communities, industry, and biodiversity,” said Alberts.
He continued to emphasize that safeguarding the Vaal River is a shared responsibility and that every stakeholder, from government to residents, must play an active role in ensuring its protection.
