Health worker suffers physical and sexual assault at the hands of a patient

A person accused of physically and sexually assaulting a health worker appeared in the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 14 August 2026 on charges of physical and sexual assault. The Free State Department of Health said this person was under observation at the health facility when he allegedly committed the acts of physical assault and sexual abuse on the health worker. The matter has been postponed to 26 August 2026 to allow for further legal processes.

Free State MEC for Health, Mr. Menyatso Mahlatsi, has emphasized the importance of due process and urged respect for the court proceedings as the case runs its course. He noted the profound impact of the proceedings on the survivor, stating that this is a sad day – as a mother who is a survivor of horrific abuse has to relive her ordeal.

“We are going to fully support the survivor and ensure that the Department fully supports her in every respect. GBV should never be tolerated,” the MEC said.

MEC Mahlatsi further underscored workplace safety across health facilities. “The provision of security is sacrosanct in all our facilities. Workers can’t be expected to work in unsafe places.” said Mahlatsi.

Mahlatsi added that the Department will continue to cooperate with law enforcement while prioritizing the survivor’s wellbeing and privacy. No further details will be disclosed at this stage to protect the integrity of the case and the dignity of those involved.
