Sergeant Bokamoso Peter has put the Free State Province on the map and also making it proud as she became the overall winner at the South African Heroine Awards held in Sun City, North West Province on Sunday, 03 November 2024.
The awards honour and celebrate women who are making a difference in society.
“It is a beautiful day! The Lord has been good to me and I am proud of this wonderful award. This is the reward for all the hard work I put into my work. I dedicate this award to my family, friends, the people of Free State province. Most importantly, I dedicate this award to victims of gender-based violence,” Peter said.
Her dedication to putting perpetrators of gender-based violence has become an obsession almost. Peter herself was violated when she was only 9 years-old and she has devoted herself to putting sex pests and abusers alike behind bars.
Sergeant Peter is a detective within the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Investigations (FCS) unit in the Free State. She is also attached to the Mangaung district serial rapist task team.
Premier of the Free State MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae said she was proud of the work of Sergeant Peter.
“To have a woman from our province recognised nationally for her work is truly wonderful and inspiring. I am immensely proud of Sergeant Peter for her dedication to her work. We are confident that victory against the scourge of Gender Based Violence and Femicide will be achieved with people like her on our side.
I would like to congratulate her for winning the award and wish her the very best in the future,” said Premier Letsoha-Mathae.
