Hard work by Detective Constable Nomathemba Mokhele, finally paid off on the eve of Women’s Day, as the Sasolburg Regional Court convicted and sentenced 34-year-old Ditlhase Masita to 14 years imprisonment for rape on Friday, 08 August 2025.

On Sunday, 26 May 2024, at about 02:00, the then 16-year-old victim was walking with her three friends – two males and one female – from one of the friends’ houses to pick up a laptop at another friend’s house. On the way, they came across two males, one known to the victim as Sparks.

The two males threatened and chased her two male friends away with a knife. The two girls were forcibly taken by the suspects to a shebeen, where they consumed alcohol until Sparks ordered the victim to forcibly go with him to his friend’s shack.

Upon arrival at the shack, the suspect undressed and raped the victim, telling her that the purpose of raping her was because her older sister would not date him, and she would pay the price for her sister’s stubbornness, and that her older brother had assaulted his brother.

The suspect then released the victim, and she managed to report the matter to her older sister, who accompanied her to open a case of rape and kidnapping. Detective Constable Mokhele is attached to the Zamdela Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit.
